Review of Heavy Metal in Baghdad (2007) by Chris O — 21 Aug 2009
A look at the situation in Baghdad from the point-of-view of metalheads who just want to play heavy music, but the hand they've been dealt prevents them from doing even that. It's very eye-opening in that you see sides of the war in Iraq that you don't see on the evening news, and how difficult it is to get any information on what's going on over there.
The documentary seems to have been made under risky/uncertain circumstances, so it almost feels incomplete by the end. It's great viewing for any fan of heavy metal just so you can see how something you take for granted like being able to cut loose at a metal show or wear your band T-shirts is something other people just like you can't do.
The film's abrupt and half-finished feel keep it from being a truly great documentary, but it's one that fans and non-fans of this music alike should partake in.
