A beautiful movie. Crialese follows a family of superstitious Sicilians as they bless themselves and make the crossing to America. The movie picks up considerably when the strangely beautiful Charlotte Gainsbourg appears, as the beautifully strange Englishwoman Lucy Reed, who insinuates herself into all the immigrants' desires with her own secret plans.
Mysterious, witty, dream-like, with yet a superreal attentiveness to historic detail, this is a masterwork -- something you'll realise when you hear Nina Simone.
