Review of Branded to Kill (1967) by Deering R — 20 Jan 2008
Branded to Kill isn't my favorite film by Seijun Suzuki, but it is the best (and most notorious) example of the director's don't-give-a-shit deconstruction of cookie cutter gangster flicks.
It's zany, but also unrepentantly dark, with a cut-up progression of events that feels outright nightmarish at times. It may not be profound, but the film's stylish nihilism is the perfect antidote to a hell of a lot of bad, boring films out there.
