Review of Branded to Kill (1967) by Simon D — 16 Nov 2014
The "No. 3 Killer" in the Japanese mafia (Jo Shishido) is forced to fight for his life when a botched hit inspires the ire of his superiors. The plot of this 1967 crime movie is about as generic as it gets, so the film's notability is wholly based on the funhouse-mirror direction of Seijun Suzuki.
The outre symbolism, frenetic jump cuts, and weird juxtapositions occasionally feel like non sequitur, but the result is something that's nigh impossible to forget. I'm not sure if Branded To Kill is a great movie (or even a good one), but it's certainly an interesting experience.
