Review of Alita: Battle Angel (2019) by Tj_Kragt — 07 Mar 2019
This movie is a competent adaptation of the manga and is head-and-shoulders above any other manga/anime to live action adaptation released by Hollywood yet. The movie is mostly true to the source material, Rosa Salazar lends the movie an emotive and entertaining performance, the action sequences are the best I've seen in a while, and the CGI is the best I've seen since Avatar released around a decade ago.
The only downside to this movie is the romance feels somewhat rushed and the story pacing can feel slightly fragmented in parts; however, I believe that is one of the downfalls of adapting source material that contains multiple chapters into a movie that hopes for sequels instead of a series, so I won't really count that against them.
Best of all, the movie shoots to entertain its audience among its various areas of competence as opposed to trying to push political rhetoric.
