Review of Zulu Dawn (1979) by Graham P — 20 Aug 2016
The film was NOT filmed on the site if the actual battle, but on a farm called "Hindenburg" a few miles from Babanango village. I was there - as a "Redcoat" and spent 6 weeks on the set while much of the second sequence (the start of the campaign from Rorke's Drift) was filmed.
Huge fun, and got to meet (and drink lots of beer with) Denholm Elliot, Bob Hoskins, Simon Ward, Dai Bradley and several other well-known actors. The film had lots of promise, but is full of historical inaccuracies - some intended, obviously for dramatic effect.
It fails to really convey the significance of this battle and lacks dramatic pace for much of the time. But it's worth watching.
