Review of Zorba the Greek (1964) by Bester L — 29 Jun 2008
Like its title character, the movie Zorba the Greek wants to shred every morsel from the bone - the comic set pieces are really funny, the sad parts are deeply awful, and everything is laid on thick. The village idiot grins away like he's paid by the tooth, the crony women mutter and caw, the dark-haired widowed beauty stares balefully at Basil who, as played by Alan Bates, is the Basilest of all Basils in the history of cinema. And Anthony Quinn, of course, is huger than anything else in the movie - possibly excepting the amazing music.
On the whole, it's all actually a bit exhausting. But still great.
