Review of Zookeeper (2011) by Philip P — 13 Oct 2011
If it were not for Kevin James I would have no interest in this "Night at the Museum" knock off that transports the action to a less interesting zoo. I like James, and he deserves better than these Sandler seconds (or at this point in Sandlers career, just scraps).
Instead, what we are given here is a generic family comedy with talking animals that sound like Sandler, Sylvester stallone and Nick Nolte. Nolte is the bright spot here as a depressed gorilla who longs for a better view of the city which is all in all just a cover up to make the kiddies who will watch this feel better about putting animals in captivity.
The story goes along as expected, and from the moment we see James' griffin working next to Rosario Dawson's Kate where this will end up, and surprise! We were right. There are a few good laughs here and there, not as many dealing with body functions as you might expect and a random Joe Rogan role makes this more enjoyable than I expected, even if for the pure ridiculousness of it all.
In the end, whats it matter, James is a charming guy and is able to make this silly little farce tolerable and so I as I'm sure many other people will see this as passable entertainment and never think about it again.
It doesn't affect us in any real way, but that little tidbit should affect James and force him to challenge himself as his big screen career continues. Hopefully resulting in something that will really display that comedic talent we saw for so many years on "King of Queens".
