Review of Zombieland (2009) by Chris M — 01 Sep 2014
I loved this. It's just a bloody good time, in all sorts of ways. There's gore and guts aplenty, two feisty female characters who give even better than they get (until the final reel, more of which later...), and two great co-leads in Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson.
The plot and premise are basic to say the least, but within that there are some terrific flourishes. I loved the rules to survive a Zombie Apocalypse, and Harrelson's quest for a Twinkie bar.
Most of all, it features perhaps the best cameo performance ever seen on screen. I laughed out load several times in just a few minutes...
There are a few problems, most notably in the final act, when our heroines start making plainly stupid decisions and seem to require rescuing, something that has been deliberately avoided up to that point. And there are odd moments throughout that seem a bit stilted, as though they're making it up as they go along, or as though not everyone quite knows the script...
But overall this is a blast. Recommended for 90 minutes of laugh-out-loud gory fun.
