Review of Zodiac (2007) by Lester Y — 24 Jun 2013

I usually don't give a shit about acting but i'd like to single out jake gyllenhaal's performance as the singular thing that makes this movie work as well as it does. you can feel his anxiety in every scene and it works wonders in making you care about a movie that is mostly (amazingly well-done and brilliantly structured) dialogue-heavy, police-procedural stuff.

Also a protip: the documentary THIS IS THE ZODIAC SPEAKING is a really nice film that complements Zodiac perfectly as it details the firsthand accounts of the murders that occur within the first few minutes of Zodiac and trails off around the time period the bulk of Zodiac focuses on. I recommend watching Zodiac before the docu though as it sort of dulls the impact of the scenes that were vividly painted by the retellings, however I the accuracy of the scenes played out is pretty astounding. so it's your call.
