Review of Zodiac (2007) by Callum S — 27 Jun 2013
A meticulously and impeccably crafted film, where every frame is used to perfection by David Fincher, directing the film like a master. Every shot is lit, shot and directed excellently, subtly and effectively, Fincher did an outstanding job with the tension, not just with the murders, but with the mystery and interrogations too, give shock after shock and the film remains haunting.
The acting is subdued, grounded, realistic and fantastic, with Jake Gyllenhal and Mark Ruffalo giving amazing performances and Robert Downey Jr being nearly as excellent. The score and soundtrack is awesome, giving the film atmosphere and the feel of the time period.
The writing is riveting, subtle, it creates nuisances and three dimensional characters, becoming very thought provoking and memorable. The only flaw is there are moments where you can tell they've used visual effects and it is distracting, but this is a provocative, intensely and rivetingly written period piece with amazing performances and a great visual style from a modern master.
