It isn't flawless, but Zodiac is a perfect example of how gore, shock, and violence alone does not make a movie. What Fincher constructs in this truly unique mystery is very deliberate, dark, brooding, and subtle, but his passion on the subject bleeds into every detail from the intricate design of the 60's and 70's to the cat-and-mouse game itself played between predator and prey.

Although in retrospect some of Fincher's choices in direction for this film seem rather outlandish, the premise itself is no doubt right up his alley, and with a wonderfully gripping script developed by Vanderbilt, Fincher carries his stylized, yet withdrawn artistic flair throughout the film with total command over both the audience and his impressively complex depictions of real-life individuals.

Although with its length it comes off as plodding and perhaps even a bit contrived at times, Zodiac is executed in such a manner that even the most boring scene under less talented oversight can be seen as compelling.

This is the rare mystery film that does not let up on tension or deliver a nice, clean-cut ending delivered in a gift-wrapped box. Zodiac will leave you with a lingering sting in knowing that this heartless, cold, calculated criminal may still be out there.
