Review of Zodiac (2007) by John T — 06 Sep 2013
An absolutely original treatment of the unsolved murder genre. You can't help but get caught up in Gyllenhaal's compulsive quest to find the (real-life) Zodiac serial killer who haunted the Bay Area at the height of the hippie era. And yes, the music is great.
Director David Fincher avoids the formulaic treatment and cheap thrills that usually come with serial killer territory. Instead he sucks you in with details. (When did you last eat an Animal Cracker?) The payoff is a look into the face of evil.
Outstanding work by Gyllenhaal, Ruffalo, and the always enjoyable Robert Downey, Jr.
