Review of Zodiac (2007) by Indi V — 01 Aug 2014
Fincher grabs you by the balls and holds you there for the duration of the movie. A slow burning mystery of one of the most infamous mysteries in history, it's a great film.
There are two detectives working this case. One, an actual detective played by Mark Ruffalo, and the second is a cartoonist played by Jake Gyllenhaal, whose character wrote the book the movie is based off of. Both men perform their roles admirably. Nobody really gives a powerhouse performance, but nobody is really given any meaty scenes to show off, though a couple of the zodiac suspects are particularly creepy, especially one that was a former film projectionist.
The real star of the movie is David Fincher. Every directorial choice he makes is absolutely perfect. We see the most famous murders committed on screen, and the ones that took place during the night are astonishing. The killer's face is never revealed, as it should be, but the way the lighting works in these shots is truly great. The cinematography is really fantastic.
A great mystery, a great thriller, and a darn solid movie.
