Review of Zatoichi and the Chess Expert (1965) by Scubasteve Walter M — 27 Jan 2014
Took Zatoichi a while to get back on his feet, in terms of the quality of his films. The franchise goes backs to its roots and used some of its original storylines. Ichi is back at pulling his tricks at gambling again and we can see him being the lady's man once more.
And yes, he turned down the lady for the nth time. LOL. But what's cool about this film is for the first time, Ichi got a partner for time being, a samurai who loves chess so much. It's good to see them both together, as fans we are used to seeing Ichi taking his challenges alone but now , he's got help.
And as a predictable plot, both of them will be enemies. That's just sad, would have love to see them continue their travels together.
