Review of Zatoichi and the Chess Expert (1965) by Steve W — 03 Mar 2015
Its good to see another side of Ichi, this time its seeing him when the chips are down. In order to procure an expensive medicine for a sick child, Zatoichi teams up with a chess expert in order to bring in the ryo.
Along the way, Zatoichi bumps into a brother/sister pair who are seeking vengeance on the man who killed their father. The title pretty much gives it away, as the chess expert is the killer. There is less action and more drama/romance, which kind of bogs down the adventure.
Ichi falls in love with the child's mother, but we already know it won't work. This was a so so entry in the Zatoichi series.
