Review of Zardoz (1974) by Melissa L — 03 Apr 2009
Sean Connery took over from Burt Reynolds to play the role of Zed, a barbarian Exterminator in a dystopian future UK. One of John Boorman's strangest films, it does not quite work and its confusing as heck but its marvelous to watch this film and try to figure out just what was going through Boorman's head (or what drugs he was on at the time).
Boorman's excellent audio commentary on the DVD is full of self-depricating humour. Connery is great, as always, and had lost a lot of the weight he had put on in the early 1970s so he was believable in the action sequences.
Prior to STAR WARS, science-fiction films tended to be overblown and pessimistic dystopias with really-bad 1970s fashion sense.
