Review of Zardoz (1974) by Jussi M — 31 May 2016
Prescient, poetical and much-maligned - a minor masterpiece. Get past the 1970's kitsch and Connery's red mankini and focus instead on the ideas. What is the purpose or meaning of life without mortality? How far can we go with science before we realise that it can't answer the really important questions? What will our rulers do with us all once the planet is too messed-up to support the teeming hordes any longer.
This is a thought-fest. I loved it when I saw it as a teenager and I think it's aged well. So sod-off to all those people who can't get beyond the rather risible styling of the movie; anyone who says they 'don't get this' is just dull-witted.
