Review of Zardoz (1974) by Lee B — 30 Aug 2011
Okay I can sum this film up in one abbreviation: "WTF"? I've seen some weird films in my time, but leave it to Sean Connery in nut hugging red short shorts and a spaceship shaped like Zeus' head that spits out guns and states to the natives: "THE GUN IS GOOD.
THE PENIS IS EVIL. THE PENIS SHOOTS SEEDS, AND MAKES NEW LIFE TO POISON THE EARTH WITH A PLAGUE OF MEN..." It's a weird ride that looks like a combination of an LSD trip, the game "Myst", and a surrealist painting taking place in the Highlands of Scotland.
It's actually quite an imaginative plot with great camerwork once you get past the 70s homoerotic glam (and exotic white boy male fros), and "Zardoz" is ripe for modern reinterpretation.
The problem with the plot exists in that nothing is explained and there's just so much going on in an abstract matter of fact moment it's hard to understand, because it's so much more than "The erection kills.
" This film so weird freaky it should be a verb meaning as a director don't go overboard just because you are without supervision. "Don't Zardoz it!" Oh well, I guess this is what happens to you after you make a critically acclaimed movie with Burt Reynolds white water rafting down a river with hillbillies butt raping people.
