Review of Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) by Sandra D — 26 Nov 2010
You gotta love Kevin Smith... Not only for the endlessly creative and hilarious word-play, but also for demystifying a process that's been so frowned upon in the past, and "as simple as filming people fucking".
A bit of Smith's genius appears here and there and the two leads are quite good ...but there is still something missing from this endeavour that could make it take off like his earlier films did. I think it's partly because of the chemisty between the two leads and partly because Kevin Smith is really not the guy to write a romantic comedy (albeit how unconventional).
Seth Rogen's character is too grounded for his sake as a comedian and Elizabeth Banks is a bit too old to play his classmate. But what is really missing here, is the "whatever" factor. This film wants too badly to wrap things up, Hollywood style : boy gets girl.
I think that a more open ending would have suited the theme better. The "porn is good because it brings couples together" underlying message is not what you want to pass to the audience after all.
