The problem with seeing a work of a so-called auteur director is that your expectations depend on the entire body of work of the creator in question. This is the completely wrong approach to Zabriskie Point, which I sadly took.

However, I was able to overcome this while watching the film, and appreciate it in its historical context. This is of great importance when considering the merits of the film, as while it does explore Antonioni's usual motifs, it is more grounded to the late-60's youth culture and US (student) politics than some more timeless and universal themes.

In other words, Zabriskie Point is more curious and more rewarding as a 60's/70's counterculture work than as an Antonioni film. In fact, it leaves much to reflect on to later, and I am not talking about just the explosive ending!

This review of Zabriskie Point (1970) was written by on 27 Aug 2008.
