Review of Z (1969) by Justin A — 09 Dec 2009
I loved how seemingly unafraid Costa Gavras was with making this film. Historical political thrillers tare about "real events", but mask certain aspects to protect people, or make wild accusations that can be argued as fact or opinion depending on what political party you are persuaded by. This was a very fast, intense, and a real (I can't believe I'm going to say it) roller-coster of a movie. It sure beats any paranoid conspiracy thriller I've seen in the last many years.
I was mildly convinced with "Missing" that Costa Garvas could deliver intense drama, but with "Z" it only proves it. (Maybe I should have seen his movies in the order they came out, but I didn't.) Here I thought that Oliver Stone or Alan J. Pakula made the best intense conspiracy films, but I was wrong.
