Review of Z (1969) by Christopher P — 21 Dec 2010
Excellent foreign thriller about a man who only wanted nuclear weapons out of the world and gets killed for it. In his speech he says "I was struck before this. What is it about what we want that makes them violent?" The man who kills Z was so freaking intolerable.
Whenever he walked around with that smug look on his face I wanted to punch him. Costa-Gavras does a great job letting his audience know exactly what they need to know for the film. I don't know anything about Greek politics, but I understood this film very well.
The music and sounds to the movie were perfect. The soundtrack seemed very ahead of its time. It's also shot in a realistic documentary style, so it really feels like you're in the middle of all of it, even when they get in the head of Z's wife.
Perfect film. I loved it, even though I'm not the biggest fan of political thrillers. This is up there with The Manchurian Candidate.
