Review of You've Got Mail (1998) by David N — 13 Jul 2010

You've Got Mail is quite the witty rom-com. The film is about two people. One of those people is, Kathleen Kelly(Ryan) who pretty much runs a small family ran bookshop and is in love with a mystery man that she knows through E-mails. The other person is Joe Fox(Hanks). Fox happens to open his book super store within walking distance from Kelly's store and ends up being competitors. Fox too, is in love with some girl he knows only through E-mail. Though they are competitors and hate each other, they also aren't aware that they're each others mystery lovers.....

The film suffers from un-even pacing. The film borrowed some concepts from Hanks' and Ryan's previous mash up Sleepless in Seattle. Regardless, the film is still entertaining and charming and definitely witty. The dialogue was sharp and quite hilarious. The story shows us how quick we as people, judge each other on the spot. The film also asks one question, can we forgive? Though Fox did things that are terrible, can Kelly forgive him and vice versa?

Is it a surprise that once again, the chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is flawless? Their chemistry feeds off of each other so well like in their 2 previous films together. What was a surprise to me is, DAVE CHAPPELLE. Though he was there briefly, I loved him. The supporting cast was great when they were on screen but one thing I truly loved about the film is how well they focused on Fox and Kelly. Most romances that I've seen have not focused on the 2 lovers enough but this film shows them apart but can still keep them together, it's truly astonishing.

Overall, the film needs just a tad bit of tolerance before anything starts. The other thing that can give mixed feelings was how Ephron borrows concepts from her previous work. Still, the movie knows that the ending is predictable but it's the road it builds to the ending that stands out. The dialogue flows easily due to the astounding chemistry from their leads. Not the best rom-com but definitely worth while. So, to all of the rom-com people out there, this is still a blast and deserves a watch!
