Review of You've Got Mail (1998) by Keenan S — 27 Jul 2013
Truth be told, I wasn't expecting much from this remake of the superb 1940 romantic comedy The Shop Around The Corner, but I ended up getting a hell of a lot more than I expected. While this film isn't as good as the one that inspired it, it is a wonderful romantic comedy that is a respectful modern rendition of the classic film.
Unlike most other modern romantic comedies, this one is well-written, funny, well-acted since the two leads have great chemistry, and even has some touching moments that sprinkled in just the right places.
Also, although I'm embarrassed to admit it, this is one of those films that is capable of putting a big goofy smile on my face and I even choke up a little at the ending. Unlike most other modern romance films that leave me scowling at the screen and angrily muttering profanities because of how awful they are, this is one I truly enjoy and feel a great sense of joy whenever I watch it.
I also think it gets better with each additional viewing, which is why I increased the rating. Thank God! An actual good romantic comedy!
