Review of Youth Without Youth (2007) by Chris W — 13 Aug 2008
Coppola finally returns to filmmaking after a decade and the end result is a murky, pretentious, bloated mess of a film. Youth Without Youth makes little sense and probably only would if you watched the some 170 hours of footage Coppola shot.
I'll give credit to the fact the film looks gorgeous and I was somewhat surprised by the Matt Damon cameo apparently acting as if it was a deleted scene from The Good Shepherd, but YWY is complex for the sake of trying to be something greater than it really is.
Let's hope Coppola's next film isn't such a disappointment.
