Review of You're Next (2013) by Gimmedatsammich — 23 Aug 2013
An extremely enjoyable horror thriller. What's great about You're Next is that the characters are real human beings who exist in more than one dimension, so their deaths are more than just "Oh damn!" moments; it really hits you in the gut when one of them is shot through the head with a crossbow.
Even the murderers are allowed a certain psychological depth, and this makes what they do all the more horrifying. I also appreciated how realistic the victims' behavior was; that is, much of what they did was stupid and irrational, but in a very believable, sympathetic way.
Most people would lose their minds in such a situation. Director Adam Wingard gets this, and as such his movie comes across as something more than a cheap slasher flick. It expertly straddles the line between verisimilitude and snuff, which is what the best of the neo-horror films aim to do.
