Review of You're Next (2013) by Jacob G — 11 Aug 2014
If you're into slasher/home invasion-type films, You're Next is a whole lotta fun. While it owes a huge debt to preceding horror, it adds its own spice, creating a neat arc that the movie follows.
Watching You're Next is like peeling back layers of an onion. You feel like you've got a grip on what's going on, then another layer reveals.
These revelations are aided by how fun the in-between-layers are. Because even when the plot stagnates to allow for slash-stalkering, the unfolding action is by itself entertaining.
Because unlike many movies of this nature, there is a viable plot to follow. It is more than just Dark Ominous Guy With Knife against cowering kids in a cabin.
And to that extent, You're Next might prove to be a disappointment for people in it solely for the gore. While there is definitely gore within, none of it particularly stands out as being better than anything that has happened in prior movies. Instead, here, it is the context and unfolding action that makes You're Next stand out.
