Review of You're Next (2013) by Frank V — 20 Aug 2014
This movie is a big B rated funfest- or at least that's what it's trying to be. You're Next has goofy writing, terrible acting, and a very tiresome concept that's as transparent as can be- and yet I enjoyed watching this.
Director Adam Wingard knows exactly what he's doing, and with Sharni Vinson (who kills her role) they manage to make a movie that should be terrible actually pretty fun. Now, this movie is not for everyone- in fact it' not for most people.
This movie is a massive glaring callback to slasher films of the 80's. There must be a jump scare every other minute, every character (except Vinson) feels incredibly unrealistic, and violence to the point of becoming mindless- That is objectively what this film is.
And yet I dug it... and I can't really articulate why.
