Review of Your Name. (2016) by Kevin K — 10 Dec 2016
Kimi no Na wa aka Your Name is the latest movie by Makoto Shinkai, a director whose movies I have never seen before actually. This movie gained a lot of traction this year and I couldn't help but be excited for it as well.
The movie centers on two young souls, Mitsuha and Taki that are under mysterious circumstances, have their minds switched from time to time, more often than not, to some very comedic moments in the movie, and yet left forgetting everything that had happened during that time as if it was just a dream.
During its first half, this movie is hilarious as you get to see the two of them trying to live out the life of the other. It is not until the second half that the movie really throws you in a loop. I lost count of the amount of times the movie tugged at my heartstrings.
From complete strangers, they learned to adapt to the other's life and formed a bond that transcends both time and space. Oh and did I mentioned how pretty this movie is? Everything is so life-like and beautiful to behold.
The movie itself is like a giant canvas filled with some of the most beautiful art I have ever seen. The many wide area scenes only serves to fuel my already strong desire to return to Japan. Kimi no na wa is by far, the best movie I have seen in 2016.
This is definitely a movie worth going to the cinema for.
