Review of Your Name. (2016) by Ewen F — 11 Jan 2017
Where to start on this one?
First off, Your Name is beautiful, the animation is fluid and graceful, but what is truly the strongest point, visually speaking, are the landscapes and outdoors scene, which are breathtaking. In a literal sense: I found myself holding my breath at several points.
Both the story and the characters are really strong as well: it's hard not to become attached to our two leads, but the secondary characters are very strong too, to the point that I got out of this movie wanting to know more about them.
As for the story, it starts out as a bit predictable perhaps, but it quickly becomes much more than expected. The mystery at the heart of this movie is wrapped up in enough funny moments and slices of life to remain light-hearted, yet it remains compelling and suspenseful.
Finally, the atmosphere of this movie is something to behold. When Miyazaki gave his own works a sober yet poetic feeling, Your Name is flashier, more dynamic, and yet it keeps this poesy that is deeply moving, even beyond the scope of the story.
All-in-all, a must-see, especially if you're into animation. The best movie I've seen in a few years, among the best I've seen period.
