Review of Your Name. (2016) by Phil S — 30 Nov 2017
Anime seems to have no small obsession with mundane teenage protagonists and high school settings. The medium is utterly littered with them. Your Name manages to set itself apart however with an intriguing body swapping premise that gets used to full dramatic effect.
While the movie is initially slow to pick up, once it got on its feet, I found myself on the edge of my seat from the nail-biting tension of epic proportions that director Makoto Shinkai brilliantly manages to pull off.
It's a highly emotional flick but never comes off as too cheap or melodramatic; its drama feels earned. By the time I reached the end of it, I was riding on such an emotional high that I had to take a few hours just to fully process it and get it out of my mind.
Your Name is the kind of film that reminds you of why you go to the movies, and leaves you with a feeling of emptiness once it's all over. Not an emptiness in the sense that you felt cheated, but rather because you feel sad that it's over and have no means to satiate your hunger for more.
Visually impressive, well-scripted, and brimming with genuine emotion, Your Name manages to succeed on every level.
