Review of Young Guns (1988) by Dwight F — 02 Dec 2008
A fictionalized movie set during the Lincoln County War, which took place in New Mexico during 1877-1878. Young Guns is one of the top 5 Westerns ever made.
Kiefer is excellent and both Lou and Emilio have parts that fit them perfectly. Dermot is pretty good too as is most of the cast. Charlie is the only truly wooden character but he fits. The movie was well written and perfectly executed building to an astonishing climax.
Lesson from the movie? Once someone is old enough to care about their political career - they should never lead. That, along with the regular retelling of greed and corruption that built a nation which made heroes out of murderers.
Historically accurate? It is set during a true historical period, and many names and instances including certain gunfights have been documented. Much of it is fiction but they did have to fit a couple of years of history into a 2 hour movie that also tries to tell much of the story around Billy The Kid (which included things that actually happened years after the Lincoln County War). All in all they did an amazing job but if you want to know what is set down in history, look it up. The real story is just as interesting!
