Review of Young at Heart (1987) by Meri G — 20 Oct 2007
Why it is called Young at Heart is beyond me. It is a tragic romance where a woman (Doris Day) who early on claims that she could only fall in love with some one who makes her laugh, leaves a decent fellow with a good sense of humor for a melodramatic stick in the mud (played by Frank Sinatra).
She runs off on her wedding day to elope with Sinatra. He attempts suicide on Christmas- before she has a chance to tell him she is pregnant. Of course he survives because she loves him- for some reason which I can only assume is because he told her to do so- and because she tells him they are going to have a baby (considerring they cannot afford to pay for food and that they live in an efficiency apartment- I would imagine that this would not necessarily be good news, but I'm a pragmatist) blah blah blah they have a baby, name it Lightening (some sort of aweful inside joke- a reference to Sinatra being convinced that he will be killed by Lightening) and everyone lives happily ever after and the fact that he is suicidal is never again addressed.
