Review of Young Adult (2011) by Jeremy H — 25 May 2012
Patton O's appearance was more, Hey, Patton Oswalt's in this movie, rather than a performance of character. His jokes were Oswalt jokes that seemed tempered by the writers when they realized that they had created a character with a traumatic past.
Like, Oh, wait. He can't be too funny. The climax involved wine on a dress and yelling, and then people kind of leaving the scene, and it felt like a half-assed attempt to recreate some fake semblance of drama from real life or another movie.
The song that she plays (on a mixtape, whoa ppl who were young in the '90's are old now, see?? But does a MiniCooper even have a tape deck?) turns out to be the same song that her old flame's wife plays in this highly improbable moms band.
A moms band where all the performers look like actual rock stars. In a small town with two bars. And a Macy's. And she never feeds or cleans up after her dog. Also, the main character is a YA author who writes about drinking and selfishness?? I like that it is a movie about a writer, but it comes off as a gimmick to invite the audience of Sex and the City rather than character development.
