Review of Young Adult (2011) by Fabian M — 27 Jan 2013
Theron stars as Mavis - a delusional woman who left her hometown for the big city immediately after high school, but never grew up from her teenage mentality. The film was developed by the same director/writer combo as Juno and shares many of the brilliant subtleties of Reitman and Cody's initial joint effort.
However, this film is more of a downer once you realize Mavis is not just quirky, but a sad figure who is depressed, drunk and in denial. I have seen her type of character depicted different ways in movies, but they're usually emphatically comedic.
Mavis' portrayal is probably more accurate as loneliness is bound to set in when those surrounding you grow up and you remain stuck in the past.
