Review of Young Adult (2011) by Faisal Z — 25 May 2012
We both like and pity Theron's Mavis, as she stumbles through her mental breakdown and severely increasing drinking problem after being deemed a woman with a cursed womb whose children abandon her before she's even bore them and whose lovers leave her shortly thereafter as well. There are a lot of layers here, and I feel the synopsis for the film and the trailer were misleading (over simplifying the film as a witty comedy). This is a very dark, very good movie. It has very darkly funny moments, and it's consistent in its protagonist's pain and confusion.
A lot of people were not really feeling this movie in the theatre, and many walked out, but I really do believe it's due to the misleading nature of the marketing for this film. All the characters here have some likeability, even Mavis, who is just trying to revert back in time, to when her world was open and new and all the ugly just hadn't happened yet.
She is jealous, was once gorgeous and having a midlife crisis. What's a girl to do?
