Review of Young Adult (2011) by Chevy C — 02 Jun 2012
Reitman's batting average continues as he shows himself to be a genuinely consistent and gifted director. This film mixes truly black humour with pathos and regret in equal measures and the overall result for me was pretty special.
Theron's Mavis Gary is one of the best characters to pop up on our screens in a long time and she is clearly having a blast playing her. We can see so much about her through her eyes which a lesser actress just wouldn't be able to convey. Resisting every urge to make her likeable, Theron manages to make you want to follow this car wreck of a human being and see if she will succeed in getting her childhood sweetheart back. There is a scene towards the end of the film during a party which is just jaw droppingly well played and is probably one of the best scenes from last year period. Quite why she did not get more recognition for her work here is truly beyond me, particularly when the likes of Streep will win an oscar for impersonating and trying to humanise Maggie Thatcher....
Just brilliant......
