This is very, very dark. Mavis is just so pathetic and unlikeable, and really, there isn't much information available to tell us how she came to be such a husk of a human being! Patrick Wilson, who I really like, doesn't really even get a look in character wise.
He's just an object in this. I laughed but I'm not sure why because this is pity comedy and it doesn't work as a drama either due to the lack of character development. This got high critic marks, maybe I'm missing something.
