Review of You Were Never Really Here (2017) by Matthew L — 03 May 2018
In commemoration of its New York and LA release today, I'll post my review from this year's Sundance screening of YWNRH. This movie IS feels. With Ramsay's directorial style in greater abundance than ever (for the better), this movie is a fever dream with highly stylized (lack of) violence, a searing perfomance from Joaquin Phoenix , and some all around great acting from a roster of unfamiliar (and unforgettable) faces.
The movie has words whispered throughout that are repeated almost as an undercurrent for Jonny Greenwood's score. Though Greenwood has been P.T. Anderson's go to, he works here with Ramsay and the soundtrack is available to stream.
And it's unreal. Dysphonic chords and harsh noises that do their best to match the rigor of Phoenix's character. This is not a movie for mainstream audiences. If you are not willing to see an artistic expression of a film, skip it.
If you are, bask in its glory. It's an outright masterpiece of mood setting. 10/10.
