Review of You Were Never Really Here (2017) by Vanessa D — 05 May 2018

This dark & disturbing taut thriller starts out with a slow burn & builds in intensity through the 2nd act while we watch the brilliance of Joaquin Phoenix move through the story as it unfurls. He deserves an Oscar nom for his performance in this suspenseful mystery drama. He is truly at the top of his game here portraying a broken Gulf War veteran who has a very strong penchant for rescuing missing teen girls and using extremely brutal tactics when dealing with their captors. The dramatic score by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead is intense in its original style, while helping build suspense throughout.

Side note, this horrifying story showing extremely vile men just brings to mind the line from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, "the evil that men do lives after them....".
