Review of You Can't Take It with You (1938) by Peter L — 22 Dec 2008
I found this film much less polished than capra's previous hit 'it happened one night,' but it is still peppered with his signature humor and earnestness. everyone learns the lessons they need to learn by the end, and everything works out better than anyone expected they could.
capra seems to be the master of the happy ending. if lucas can be blamed for the blockbuster, then maybe we need to hold capra responsible for the 'formula comedy.' after a rocky start, there are some great comic moments that still hold up quite well - the surprise dinner scene is a classic of ensemble comedy.
