Review of You Can't Take It with You (1938) by Padraig G — 10 Apr 2011
A classic for a reason.
This film is based off of the Pulitzer-Prize winning play with the same name. It is about a girl named Alice (Jean Arthur) who is the only normal person in her rather weird family who falls in love with Tony Kirby (James Stewart) who comes from a rich uptight family and there on the story goes...
This movie was pretty good. I found myself laughing even though it the time it was made which is a good sign that it manages to stay funny throughout the years.
The acting was pretty good as well as all the staging and characters are easy to connect with.
The movie is a bit corny at times but that is to be expected in a movie starring James Stewart. It also does show as dated.
As for the Oscars this won Best Picture and I don't know what to say about that. I guess it was pretty good but I'm not sure about Oscar-type however the only Oscar WINNER I've seen from that era is Casablanca and thats hard to step up to. On my Netflix queue I do have one of the movies this beat. Grand Illusion so I'll be checking that out therefore I can have some vague opinion on if this should of won the Oscar.
80% Pretty good, easily a classic, good adaption.
