Review of You Can Count on Me (2000) by Paul P — 08 Dec 2003
After Made I watched You Can Count on Me, which I absolutely loved and will probably find a place in my Top Fifty if I decide to re-do it anytime soon. Linney is perfection in this and I loved Ruffalo.
His relationship with Rory Culkin's character is quite moving and the Linney and Ruffalo work together with great ease and conviction. Wonderful dialogue and brilliantly understated direction on Ken Lonergan's part.
Matthew Broderick creates an admirable balance between shitty boss and hapless loser. The ending left me misty-eyed, indeed, and the whole movie was a wonderful blend of emotional storytelling and incredibly well-crafted filmmaking.
Good stuff, to be sure.
