Review of Yes Man (2008) by Manicure — 22 Nov 2020
Yes Man is a decent romantic comedy. As everyone mentioned, Jim Carrey plays the same character each time, the humor is dated, and the plot is essentially a remake of Liar Liar, but I fairly enjoyed it nevertheless.
Its structure is highly predictable: Carl is an **** until some weird event changes him for the better. His life gets great until the side-effects start showing up, but then the moral kicks in and everything is resolved for the best.
I didn't mind the fact that they rehashed this formula, as it was pretty clear from prior watching the movie, but I wished they could at least apply it decently. The first half goes as expected, but the troubles and final resolution are way too sketched and rushed.
Some FBI dudes came out of nowhere and had no realistic reasons to detain Carl or be interested in his doings anyway. It just happened because they couldn't think of more convincing or realistic consequences to his behavior.
And a simple talk with Terence was enough to resolve everything: sure you gotta be open to everything to enjoy life, but be moderated. ???? Carl was fixated with the covenant but didn't bother reading the book? Sure it's a silly comedy but still, nothing in the second half made sense.
