Review of Yellow Submarine (1968) by Susan H — 20 Oct 2010
Yellow Submarine is a fun and beautifully animated film with great music that's a serious mind trip.
Yellow Submarine's plot is the basic music related plot. We are introduced to Pepperland, a world filled with music loving folks, who are captured by the music and positive hating Blue-Meanies. A man named Old Fred hops into the Yellow Submarine to find some "heroes" to save Pepperland, and of course, chooses the Beatles. The majority of the movie is just them getting to Pepperland, which is long and even dull at points. I won't spoil anymore of the plot for those who want to see it, but I will say it gets pretty surreal.
Like I said above, Yellow Submarine is a serious mind trip. The color palette must've used all the colors in the Crayola box, plus one hundred. But it's all the colors and art design that makes Yellow Submarine beautiful to watch, and (especially the "Eleanor Rigby" sequence) uses clever combinations of different art forms. The plot is nothing to get excited about, since it's pretty general. But what you will find is the best voice actors I've ever seen for The Beatles, they even match their humor, which shows why the actual Beatles enjoyed this film so much.
Yellow Submarine is not for everyone, but the pure beauty of it makes it one of my favorite films of all time. Brilliant visuals and a funny script make Yellow Submarine an enjoyable hour and forty or so. (Real rating: 100%).
