Review of Yellow Submarine (1968) by Charlie H — 22 Jul 2017
Yellow Submarine (1968) is a fantastic animated film featuring The Beatles, who find themselves caught up in a psychedelic, illusory universe packed with seas of time and the devilish Blue Meanies. Their mission is to save Pepperland; a land of love and music.
Yellow Submarine's every scene bursts with colourful creatures, outlandish imagery and dimensional illusions - all of which are wonderfully weird and absorbing. The animation flows with a freedom that mirrors the time period (and The Beatles themselves), and the music is, of course, fantastic.
If that all wasn't enough, Yellow Submarine is also brimming with the dry British wit that The Beatles became known for. The tone of the film is one of freedom and fun; every other line is a pun. Yellow Submarine is simply spellbinding.
The film really takes hold of you; whisking you into the eccentric world that the submarine explores. Though it's a shame that the characters in Yellow Submarine aren't voiced by The Beatles themselves, the voice acting is excellent.
Yellow Submarine is a near-perfect film; it's certainly one of the greatest animated films ever made. It's charming for everyone, in every possible way.
