Review of Year of the Dragon (1985) by Alan L — 06 May 2008
No, no, not racist. Realist. Frankly, scarilly, those were real New York chinese triad members, who authentically auditioned to play the extra gang parts, one of them dying in a driveby after shooting.
Mickey plays the Polish slimebag with as much racial bias, but because he's the main character (and gets away with being a bigot), people miss that Cimino thought he was giving a nuanced look at the time.
(Statistical argument: When you study the worst in people, everyone looks bad). Still I can't forget this movie, it reminds you that nothing is simple and nothing is PC, and maybe Cimino's expert hand is as careful as any to study that time place and era.
