Review of Year of the Dragon (1985) by Stephen C — 28 Mar 2012
To many director Michael Cimino was a busted flush after the debacle that was Heavens Gate ,but before he vanished he made this minor masterpiece which contains a standout performance from Mickey Rourke.
Rourke plays Stanley White a ruthless cop who intends to bring order to the lawless streets of New Yorks China Town.
In his way stands Joey Tai played by John Lone who is just as determined to cut the mafia out of the drugs market and flood the streets with heroin.
What follows is a bloody and exciting game of cat and mouse which will see bodies oile up on both sides as both men strive to reach their goal.
Ciminio and Screenwriter Oliver Stone give the film a mean wallop with plenty of set piece action and a tense climax the only thing that feels forced is Whites romance with a crusading reporter .
The film belongs to Rourke and you cannot take your eyes off him as he smashes his way to the final showdown with Joey Tan.
A film which has fallen by the wayside and thats a shame ,as it one of the directors best films.
