Review of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) by Cristina H — 04 Jul 2009
I hate to admit this, but I've never seen a James Cagney film besides this. So I have no idea what he's like as a gangster. However, as a dancer, he's fantastic. He has a really great voice too.
He tends to sing every song in the EXACT SAME WAY, however. "Cause I'M a Yankee Doodle...DANdy." That sort of annoyed me toward the end. Though it tended to drag at times (very few times), it was overall a really good, touching movie.
I cried when his father was dying in the bed and I cried again at the end. It was just so touching, so patriotic, so innocent and heart-warming. It's also a story about a family who love and cherish each other through everything.
There was not a hint of malice, selfishness, or ill will anywhere. It really leaves you with a sense of good feeling.
